Abstract

This Doctoral Thesis aims to answer the following questions: What kind of practices with audiovisual fiction can be observed in online social networks? How audiovisual fiction is used in social network sites? How those practices can be related to users’ identity construction? Help social network sites to consolidate migration between screens to consume/use audiovisual fiction? What are the differences between users from Chile and Spain? As a main objective, this research aims to analyze OSN users’ practices in Chile and Spain though the observation of their use (consume, appropriation and creation) of audiovisual fiction content. To achieve this goal, we have addressed the different parts of theoretical work through a network of authors who cover the needs of delimitation of concepts, providing a rich discussion on empirical data with interesting theoretical proposals for observing the theme research. The key concepts that guide the research, and are also fundamental for the methodological approach, are those already set out in the title: Practices (Bourdieu, 2010; Reckwitz, 2002; Couldry, 2010; Gómez Cruz, 2012), Online Social Networks (Rainie & Wellman, 2012; Miller, 2010; Baym, 2009; Boyd, 2007), Audiovisual Fiction (Vilches, 2001, 2009, 2010; Jenkins, 2009, 2010; Aranda, Sánchez & Roig, 2013) and Identity (Goffman, 2009; Baym, 2009; Turkle, 1984, 1997, 2011; Wallace, 2001). For the data collection process, a quantitative tool (online questionnaire) and two qualitative (online group interview and observation) are selected. They provide information to establish links between results and achieve goals. The online questionnaire and observation are the tools that allow conclusions to be drawn about the practices related to the use of audiovisual fiction and the construction of identity in an exploratory manner. The group interview, meanwhile, provides a level of much more specific and deep information on audiovisual fiction practices in online social networks, to create identity discussion. The sample for the quantitative work was defined at the beginning of the research and is composed of 428 respondents residing in Chile and Spain. This profile considers men and women over 18 years with different educational levels and occupations, living in different cities of each country. None of the participants declared belonging to organized groups of fans, related to audiovisual fiction. The same profile is used for selecting 30 informants for the qualitative area of this study. The online observation includes a year of research into various networks and groups. From this methodological work and the theoretical work, led in parallel, the conclusions are: a) users practices do not vary between the compared geographical contexts, b) online social networks collaborate in strengthening migration between screens c) audiovisual fiction is a central element in the construction of identity, d) the construction of identity through the use of objects such as audiovisual fiction allows the accumulation of social capital, e) fiction draws on practices with technology to develop more attractive scripts.
