Interior-exterior en arquitectura
Castillo Fuentealba, Carlos Ignacio
(English) The purpose of the doctoral thesis is to study interior spaces - built in the old tradition of closed and contrasted architecture – relativized in their interior condition. In the classical opacity and the difference between the inside and the outside, we find a different relationship to the so-called "fluid space" of modernity, between the interior and the exterior condition.
The first part approaches a conceptual definition of the topic, understanding the interior-exterior as the construction of an interior and, simultaneously, an exterior experience, of opposite tendency in the intimacy of confinement. Reviewing from the intemperie, that manufactures the intrusion of atmospheric phenomena in the enclosed space, to a more unprejudiced and heterogeneous way of understanding the interior as exterior.
The body of the thesis is divided into three maps (or parts) that grasp the interior-exterior from an independent point of view, studying the treatment of its limits, but with the constraint of always beginning the story in Mediterranean interiors, to continue in Germany, and culminate mainly in the architecture of Nordic neoclassicism in Sweden and Denmark. Together, they make up the observatory proposed by the Thesis, overlapping in a single cartography that follows the reverse orientation left by the displacements of Northern European architects to the classical world.
Within each map, the interiors are ordered according to two simultaneous criteria: firstly, a thematic perspective. And, secondly, a geographical disposition with a northerly direction. The interiors are progressively linked to explain the proposed argument and each interior space presupposes the explanation of the previous one. Moreover, the three maps follow a sequential order, although each one has enough individual nature for non-linear reading.
The first map revisits the maximum exteriority that defines the symbol of contained universal space and the vertical tendency of the enclosure, finding its revelation in the infinite staircase. The second map traces the dome and the tent in the romantic garden, both suspended within traditional roofs, hidden among trees of picturesque outdoor promenades. Finally, the third map explores inductively the things, inventorying elements that, placed inside, relativize the interior and approach the ambiguity of an internal landscape.
The winter climate conditions the architecture of Northern Europe and the need for covering establishes a dialectical relationship with the exterior experience and also with the repetition and interpretation of the admired classical interiors, increasing, by contrast, the exterior condition of its interiors.; (Español) El objetivo de la tesis doctoral es estudiar los espacios interiores, construidos en la antigua tradición de la arquitectura cerrada y contrastad, relativizados en su condición interior.

The Galapagos archipelago is one of the best preserved protected natural ecosystems on the planet. It is recognized around the world as a privileged tourist destination and advertised as a haven of pristine nature. Thanks to its volcanic geology and isolated geographical position in the Pacific Ocean, it has very specific environments that have made it home to very particular species that exist only in this area, and it has been declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. However, the Galapagos archipelago is also home to more than 30,000 permanent inhabitants and receives more than 275,000 tourists a year. Its various human settlements have followed an urbanization process that has been mostly ignored in planning and conservation management. Despite being considered one of the most studied territories in the world, the study of architecture and urban planning in the Galapagos has been relegated, in most cases, to information surveys on the existing infrastructure. Due to the belief that the community is harmful to the environment, human settlements have been excluded from the protection policy that applies to most of the territory. This has led to a neglected urban space, which is inserted in the middle of the protected space, generating conflicts between both spatial definitions. Despite everything, the shape of the city has had to respond to the physical geography of the archipelago, which has defined the position and shape of the urban areas and the agricultural territory. This thesis analyzes the construction of the urban form of the Galapagos archipelago in relation to the islands’ geographical conditions and volcanic landscape, and the way in which the city has been built either taking into account or ignoring the physical conditions of the geographical structure so unique to Galapagos.
This thesis is composed of two Volumes. The First Volume analyzes, from a historical and morphological perspective, the development process of the city of Puerto Ayora on the island of Santa Cruz, studying the relationship between the built environment and the protected environment in a logic of scale. First, an analysis of the city and its components is conducted in relation to its immediate surroundings. Second, a reading of the city is made in relation to the surrounding region, which in the case of the archipelago is defined by the island that contains the city. Third, the position of Galapagos in world geography and the international political landscape is studied. Finally, a generic position is established, which allows for the application of general concepts to a particular case. The interaction between the natural environment and the built environment serves as a common denominator throughout the chapters.
The Second Volume of this thesis presents a retrospective of the Galapagos International Architecture Studio, an academic program carried out by the author, which was developed over 8 consecutive years, and which brought together more than 280 students and 40 professors from different parts of the world to create architectural proposals in the urban-natural context of Galapagos. In this Second Volume, the proposals developed in this workshop are selected and classified based on different scales: first a building scale, where the design of the individual object prevails, a second scale that explores the border condition between urban space and protected space, and a third, a territorial scale that develops general strategies linked to the restrictions on the territory due to its insularity.; El archipiélago de Galápagos es uno de los ecosistemas naturales protegidos mejor preservados del planeta.

Erazo Solines, Juan
This PhD dissertation deals with the importance of having a methodological teaching for architecture education and its future professional practice, taken as a reference Enrique Ciriani and the Grupo UNO pedagogical contributions. This knowledge was applied in San Francisco of Quito University architecture design classes; to evaluate, validate and verify its compatibility with the new teaching systems that have evolved in time.
This practice arises from the need to transmit to teachers and students an architecture pedagogy which is based on its own principles and elements, and Enrique Ciriani's grammar definition has been worked during this thesis process, to provide the students a design language to allow them to work with a better confidence.
The exercise that has been taken as reference was the 30 x 30, which was used by Grupo UNO in the first year. It allowed to teach the students spatial displacement combined with architecture principles and elements. In the same way the teachers of Grupo UNO, who acquired this knowledge, had applied it in their own professional projects. They can be observed in this research.
During the research process the importance of carrying out a registry was emphasized. It made possible to follow up the entire design process: sketching as a basic tool, main ideas, preliminary studies and sequential exercises. Additionally, clear rules were provided for each exercise, in one side the design tools and in the other side the methodology. All this process has been photographed for future assesments. As a result of this thesis, a verifiable grammar based on spatial displacement, principles, and elements, was obtained.
This research is a synthesis of Enrique Ciriani and Grupo UNO pedagogy and the acquired knowledge and experience of the architect that returns to the academy to feedback it. The contribution of this doctoral thesis it narrow the gap between theory and practice in architecture education, as well as to leave a file to transmit this pedagogy to both: teachers and students.; La presente tesis doctoral trata sobre la importancia de contar con una metodología para la enseñanza y posteriormente la práctica de la arquitectura tomando como referencia los aportes pedagógicos de Ernique Ciriani y el Grupo UNO y poniéndolos en contexto en la actualidad.

The PhD thesis THE FORM IN RICHARD NEUTRA'S RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE. 1950-1965, investigates the maturity of the professional career of the architect Richard Neutra (1892-1970) focusing on the single-family house. From the extensive bibliographic documentation of the architect, the research focus on a period of his architectural production in which he is intensely dedicated to residential architecture.
The research examines the relationship between the structure and the formal conception of the residential project, confirming the importance of technique in the design process. Formal coherence and structural logic define Neutra's modern project that adapts to the needs of the clients and the characteristics of the site. The asymmetrical plants and fluid modern matrix distributions illustrate Neutra's spatial dynamism and commitment to the individuality of its inhabitants. A dynamic and expansive principle governs the composition of the residential project that projects the home into the landscape. Neutra identifies the environmental qualities of the site, the characteristics of the context and of the tradition, and evaluates the incidence of natural factors in the project to provide the best environmental conditions for users.
Contextualized in Richard Neutra's trajectory and arranged chronologically, 67 single-family houses are analyzed, examining the functional demands, the site conditions and the coherence between form, construction system and materiality.
Methodologically, the research starts from the digital reconstruction of the project, confirming formal logic and structural understanding, reflecting the consistency of the modular approach as an instrument of economy and formal rigor. The linear gantry system is transformed into a structural framework that combines load-bearing wall bays and adapts to the strict orthogonal frame. The axonometric perspective examines the constructive sequence of the project, identifying the implantation mechanisms in the terrain, the structural system and the autonomy and specialization of the construction components. The three-dimensional reconstruction also illustrates the techniques of assembly and constructive articulation of the specialized components that express the material condition of the construction and the aesthetic refinement of the modern project. The logic of construction establishes the order of the space and characterizes the interaction with the environment. The wide overhangs underline the spatial continuity of the domestic project and establish a sequence of intermediate spaces. The coherence of the formal logic of the project orders the architectures of connection and the transitions between spaces try to enrich the sensory experience of the inhabitants.
Through the analysis of Richard Neutra's domestic project, the constants of the architect in the field of single-family housing are illustrated, underlining the continuities, which allow establishing an analytical taxonomy and a confirmation of the architect's methodical, constructive and formal discipline.; La tesis Doctoral LA FORMA EN LA ARQUITECTURA RESIDENCIAL DE RICHARD NEUTRA. 1950-1965, indaga en la madurez de la trayectoria profesional del arquitecto Richard Neutra (1892-1970) centrándose en la vivienda unifamiliar.
