In order to pursue sustainable objectives in the construction industry, a new composite material using vegetal fabric coated with resin and embedded into mortar was developed, characterized and applied on masonry walls.
In this study, fabrics of different types of vegetal fibres (flax, hemp, sisal, and cotton) coated with resins were manufactured, and with them, FRCM (Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix) specimens were produced for tensile tests and bonding tests with masonry units. Once characterized the FRCM of vegetal fibers specimens, two types of fibres were chosen to reinforce masonry walls. Results showed an excellent interaction between vegetal fibres and mortar matrix. The coating with resins improved the mechanical properties of the yarns and avoided the typical slipping failures in FRCM composites.
For strengthening masonry walls, hemp and cotton FRCM were chosen. Hemp FRCM was the composite that reached the highest mechanical strength, whereas cotton FRCM had the greatest elongation capacity and multicracking response. These strengthening systems increased significantly the shear strength and the ability to dissipate energy from the unreinforced masonry walls, showing even better efficiency than glass FRCM strengthened walls (also tested in this study) under cyclic loading. In addition, the use of a greater volume of fibres in the case of the FRCM of vegetal fibres allowed reducing the volume of cementitious matrix to be used (0.5 and 5%, contrasted with glass-FRCM), which reduced the specific weight of the FRCM.
In addition, analytical and numerical models were proposed for the analysis of FRCM and wall specimens manufactured and tested in this study. Their experimental results adjusted the parameter of analytical and numerical models. These models were effective calculation tools to reproduce FRCM specimens and masonry walls reinforced with FRCM behavior, where the connection between mesh-mortar and mortar-masonry is good enough to avoid failures due to mesh sliding and mortar debonding.
In general, this thesis represents a great step in the topic of the use of vegetable fibers within cementitious matrices. Well, from the low density, low cost and sustainability that represent vegetal fibres it was possible to develop a composites with greater sustainability and efficiency (in contrast with the synthetic fibers FRCM used in this study), able to improve the mechanical performance of masonry walls subjected to cyclic loading.; Con el fin de perseguir objetivos sostenibles en la industria de la construcción, se desarrolló, caracterizó y aplicó en muros de mampostería un nuevo material compuesto basado en mallas de fibras vegetales recubierta con resina y embebidas en una matriz cementicia de mortero.

Numerical modelling of the growth and remodelling phenomena in biological tissues
Comellas Sanfeliu, Ester
Living biological tissues are complex structures that have the capacity of evolving in response to external loads and environmental stimuli. The adequate modelling of soft biological tissue behaviour is a key issue in successfully reproducing biomechanical problems through computational analysis.
This study presents a general constitutive formulation capable of representing the behaviour of these tissues through finite element simulation. It is based on phenomenological models that, used in combination with the generalized mixing theory, can numerically reproduce a wide range of material behaviours.
First, the passive behaviour of tissues is characterized by means of hyperelastic and finite-strain damage models. A new generalized damage model is proposed, providing a flexible and versatile formulation that can reproduce a wide range of tissue behaviour. It can be particularized to any hyperelastic model and requires identifying only two material parameters.
Then, the use of these constitutive models with generalized mixing theory in a finite-strain framework is described and tools to account for the anisotropic behaviour of tissues are put forth.
The active behaviour of tissues is characterized through constitutive models capable of reproducing the growth and remodelling phenomena. These are built on the hyperelastic and damage formulations described above and, thus, represent the active extension of the passive tissue behaviour. A growth model considering biological availability is used and extended to include directional growth. In addition, a novel constitutive model for homeostatic-driven turnover remodelling is presented and discussed. This model captures the stiffness recovery that occurs in healing tissues, understood as a recovery or reversal of damage in the tissue, which is driven by both mechanical and biochemical stimuli.
Finally, the issue of correctly identifying the material parameters for computational modelling is addressed. An inverse method using optimization techniques is developed to facilitate the identification of these parameters.; Els teixits biològics vius són estructures complexes que tenen la capacitat d'evolucionar en resposta a càrregues externes i estímuls ambientals.

This study aims to develop a computational method focused on achieving the static equilibrium of masonry structures made up of one-dimensional elements by using the standard analogy of antifunicular modeling. The method combines the basics of the theory of plasticity, the concept of antifunicular nets and a series of optimization techniques, in order to define a methodology for solving the structural calculation of masonry structures.
The method presented is designed to have a practical implementation. This is a general feature shared by the development of the various elements taking part in its computational implementation.
The first element developed is a tool allowing three-dimensional nets simulation for pressure lines. Both an analytical formulation and a numerical implementation for a new cable element are covered by the development of this tool, so that the simulation of complex cable nets by a steady and efficient way is allowed.
The second tool included in this study and numerically implemented helps on automating the search of pressure line nets which allow to establishing the equilibrium in a masonry structure, based on limit analysis principles. This process is carried out by defining a non-linear optimization problem with restrictions, that will be tackled by adapting standard optimization algorithms to the case studied.
The method that has been developed will be applied to different examples such as Bridgemill Bridge, Mallorca Cathedral, the towers in the facade of Barcelona Cathedral and Girona Cathedral. Most of the examples executed were studied previously by other authors; thus, it was possible to compare the results achieved and to determine the accuracy degree obtained whit the method shown.
Finally, the present study will set out different research and development lines which will be left opened. This research lines involve both studying the applicability for the new cable element developed by the study of different structure types which have nothing to do with masonry structures, and going into the study of the equilibrium of non-skeleton masonry structures.

This dissertation deals with obtaining the mechanical properties of the cortical bone of the human ribs.
One hundred one samples from 76 donors were tested for this study. The number of tested samples significantly outnumbers the usual number of samples in most studies of this type.
A useful system has been designed and implemented for measuring the mechanical properties from tensile tests. The tested specimens were obtained from the micro-samples of cortical bone.
The proposed relations for the characteristic values of the mechanical behavior involve anthropometric variables, such as the age, the gender of the donor and the fractal dimension of the cross section of the tested specimen.
Probability distributions were calculated from the results of the tests and expressions for the mean values and the deviations of the parameters (such as ultimate stress, maximum strain, modulus of linear elasticity, toughness, or yielding stress) were proposed.
The methodology and the obtained results are consistent with the literature. Furthermore, a novel methodology for obtaining the mechanical parameters of the cortical bone of human ribs, without using destructive testing, was established.
The thesis has direct application in several areas: firstly, it gives new tools in the areas of simulation of the mechanical behavior of human rib and, secondly, it is useful for the design of vehicle restraint systems which act primarily on the costal arch.; La tesis doctoral versa sobre la obtención de las propiedades mecánicas del hueso cortical de costilla humana.
