Abstract

The purpose of this study is to look into the errors that are frequently produced during the acquisition of sounds of the Catalan language. Two tasks have been designed: one consists of naming words and the other in repetition of pseudowords. The two tasks have been carried out to 150 children between the ages of 3 and 7 from several elementary schools. Five types of different variables have been used in order to examine the errors and to show extensively all factors that could help explain the errors and their causes. The variable resultat 1 distinguishes the errors and the correct utterances; the variable resultat 2 organises the errors according to the basic properties affected: manner of articulation, place of articulation and voicing; the variable resultat 3 organises the errors according to different types of processes: substitution, assimilation, elision, epenthesis or metathesis; the variable resultat 4 joins the information proceeding from the last two variables; and finally, the variable resultat 5 shows the most frequent individual errors (from segment to segment).
All variables are submitted to the same type of analysis. First, the evolution of errors in the two tasks (naming vs. repetition) has been looked into descriptively, according to the different age groups. Then the contribution of different linguistic and extralinguistic factors in the production of errors is measured using stadistic tasks. Among the extralinguistic factors, there are the type of task, the age, the sex and the position on the list. Among the linguistic factors, there are the manner of articulation, the place of articulation and voicing of the segment, the syllable position, the nature of adjacent segments and the stress of the affected syllable.
This thesis is based on the so-called phonetically based phonology, which puts forward that phonology is influenced by the production and perception conditions. Within this theoretical framework, it is interesting to find out whether the detected errors are caused by the syllabic position, the basic properties of the segment (voicing, manner or place) or the adjacent segments.
Results seem to indicate that there are more place articulation errors in the repetition task and more voicing errors in the naming task. Besides, the errors produced by children before the age of 4 involve more than one basic property, whereas after the age of 4 they involve only one property. The factors that mostly seem to account for the presence of errors are manner of articulation, place of articulation, followed by adjacent segment and syllabic position. Therefore, this study argues that it is necessary to take into account all these factors to explain the behaviour of segments and the changes that they suffer during the acquisition of the system of sounds in Catalan.
