dc.description.abstract

dc.description.abstract
The Human occupation of the southern tip of South America took place at the end of the Pleistocene, about 11000 years ago. People who came to inhabit this region were huntergatherers that did in a period of major environmental changes that could cause, together with humans, the so-called Pleistocene Megafaunal extinction. The South end was the end of a long journey that started ten of thousands of years ago in Africa when the first modern humans began to move through several continents. Once one has perceived the natural scenery and its changes and the progress of time and cultural changes that occurred as this progressed, and since the archaeological record is discontinued, have to wonder about what happens or became the first populations, and if these became finally those groups known historically. Because, as it arises in one of the chapters of this work, might be also that by external factors some could fail in its efforts to establish itself in these new lands. Our intention is to contribute with a critical examination of the paleoenvironmental and archaeological evidence, trying to see what new challenges we have to cope in the study of the early settlement of the region. Also, we will try to understand what happened to human populations of the island of Tierra del Fuego during the early and midle Holocene in the light of some data that point out to a catastrophe whose real magnitude we don't know but could play a good part of the population on failure to stablish in this new land. Finally, we hope that the examination of genetic, linguistic, ethnohistorical and archaeological data bring us closer to the understanding of cultural overview of societies that lived in Fuego-Patagonia at the time of the arrival of the Europeans and their subsequent disappearance.
