Imagen corporal, funcionamiento sexual y autoestima en mujeres brasileñas con un Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC) elevado

Abstract

En la sociedad brasileña, el `culto al cuerpo` es una práctica común y diseminada entre las mujeres. El objetivo general de la investigación es analizar si las puntuaciones del Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC), de mujeres brasileñas, interfieren en los niveles de satisfacción corporal (imagen corporal), funcionamiento sexual y autoestima. El diseño fue cuantitativo, y se han empleado cuatro instrumentos distintos, en una muestra de 102 mujeres brasileñas. Los cuestionarios utilizados fueron: un instrumento para evaluar el nivel socioeconómico (FISS), la figura corporal (BSQ); un índice de la función sexual femenina (FSFI) y la Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg. Los resultados apuntan que entre las mujeres con algún grado de obesidad hay distintos grados de insatisfacción corporal; los índices del funcionamiento sexual son satisfactorios; no hay correlación significativa entre IMC y autoestima. En cuanto a la variable edad, no se han encontrado datos significativos en relación la satisfacción con la imagen corporal. Otro hallazgo fue la falta de homogeneidad en las respuestas del funcionamiento sexual. Estos datos desmitifican algunas creencias acerca de la sexualidad de la mujer con sobrepeso, madura, valores diseminados en la cultura brasileña.

In Brazilian society, `body worship` is a common and widespread practice among women. The overall objective of the research is to analyze whether the scores of body mass index (BMI) in Brazilian women, interfere with body satisfaction levels (body image), sexual functioning and self-esteem. The designs were quantitative, and four different instruments have been used, in a sample of 102 Brazilian women. Questionnaires were used: a tool to assess socioeconomic status (FISS), body shape (BSQ), an index of female sexual function (FSFI) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. The results show that among women with some degree of obesity there are varying degrees of body dissatisfaction; rates of sexual functioning are satisfactory and there is no significant correlation between BMI and self-esteem. As for the age (variable?) significant data regarding satisfaction with body image is not found. Another finding was the lack of homogeneity in the responses of sexual functioning. (This data demystifies some beliefs about the sexuality of mature, overweight women, scattered in Brazilian cultural values.)
