Abstract

These PhD thesis inquiries into the experiences of two groups of young Mapuches who are from San Bernardo and Santiago de Chile and whose participation in the workshop called “Taller de fotografía Indígena Azentún”, made them reflect critically on their indigenous descent in the city. For this purpose, the youngsters talk about this issue and reflect on the different visual representations of the Mapuche people and, after that, perform and elaborate their image again. From the 19th century, the image of the Mapuches has been a controversial issue, this is due to the fact that there are several stereotypes and stigmas referring to their condition, what has caused a rejection of the indigenous descent and even among the Mapuches; this has brought a modern idea which consists of considering only one State instead of two of very different people. Taking this into account, photography has been used by the dominant social classes as a device which subordinates the image of the Mapuche promoting the collective identity of the nation. Nowadays, there is a conception which shows the Mapuche as someone violent and also as a terrorist; whereas there are some photographers who claim a type of photography from the Mapuche point of view with the idea of self-representation. For this reason, I investigate in the use of photography as the method for recovering the Mapuche self-image and, be part of a self-construction process which is related to a number of different identities that coexist in our country. Therefore, I investigate a type of photography as a tool used to reflect visually and critically capable of destabilizing the essentialist notion of identity. This research took place between 2012 and 2016 in three stages: the first was a theoretical investigation which consisted of looking for different representations of the Mapuche people and also writing the theoretical framework. The second part of this investigation consisted of establishing the methodology which was going to be used and the third phase had to do with the collection of images through the implementation of the workshop called Azentún. In this final stage, some concepts were considered and used such as the performing capacity of photography (Zúñiga, 2013) and the idea of reconstructing the ethnic image from the creation of Mapuche self-referential collections (Triquell, 2013).
