Apel·les Mestres (1854-1936), artista i col·leccionista polifacètic

Abstract

El treball presentat pretén la configuració d’una nova biografia d’Apel·les Mestres a partir de l’estudi d’una de les activitats que va practicar i que va ser el d’arreplegar obres d’art i d’antiguitats. Podrà comprovar-se que va existir una relació entre la mateixa i la seva professió com a artista, alhora que entre aquestes i el seu entorn més immediat. Precisament, un dels punts més interessants serà la introspecció que es farà en la intimitat del personatge, i que s’aconseguirà a partir de l’anàlisi de la influència rebuda per part de la família i d’amics. De la mateixa manera, i tot atenent, de nou, a la disciplina d’història del col·leccionisme, també s’examinaran els motius pels quals va preservar i adquirir certes peces i els que van dur-lo a exhibir-ne en l’àmbit privat com en el públic. Tot plegat està culminat amb una explicació sobre les circumstàncies que han portat la col·lecció Mestres en el seu estat actual de disgregació entre les diferents institucions que van rebre’n una part en forma de llegat per les pròpies disposicions testamentàries de l’artista.

This dissertation aims to create a new biography of Apel·les Mestres based on the study of one of the activities in which he was engaged: the collection of artwork and antiquities. As will be shown, there was a connection between this activity and his profession as an artist, as well as between these two occupations and his immediate environment. In fact, one of the most interesting aspects will be the introspective study in his personal matters, based on the analysis of the influence his family and friends had on him. In addition, and once again taking into account the history of collection, we will examine the reasons why he purchased and preserved certain pieces and why he decided to exhibit some of them in public as well as in the private sphere. Finally, this paper concludes with an explanation about the circumstances which have led to the current spreading of Mestres’s collection among various institutions, which received part of it as legacy, as stated in the artist’s will.
