El naixement del tema de l’Ascensió de Crist en el context del primer art cristià

Abstract

La present investigació té, com a marc general, l’estudi de l’aparició del primer art i iconografia cristiana, més concretament, del naixement de l’episodi de l’Ascensió de Crist. Aquesta escena no sorgeix en les primeríssimes representacions cristines, sinó que hem d’esperar més d’un segle i mig per trobar-ne testimonis. Així, se’ns proporciona un aparador privilegiat des d’on observar el fenomen de la gestació i desenvolupament de les primeres imatges cristianes a través d’un cas particular. Es per això que l’objectiu principal de la present recerca és intentar resoldre les qüestions de quan, com i per què apareix aquesta iconografia.

Per portar-ho a terme s’ha recollit el màxim nombre possible d’obres conservades que contenen aquest episodi de la vida de Crist. Com que no creiem viable una anàlisi iconogràfica desvinculada de l’obra o objecte on s’inscriu, s’ha portat a terme un petit estudi de cas de cada una d’aquestes peces, que ha servit de base per a plantejar-nos idees generals sobre la composició, funció o possibles significats de la nostra iconografia.

Un altre dels objectius epicentres de la recerca ha estat indagar els referents i dependències, tan formals com conceptuals, que van poder influenciar la gestació del nostre tema, amb especial atenció a la comparativa entre l’Ascensió i les apoteosis heroiques i imperials. Per això, hem dedicat un bloc a l’estudi del concepte apoteosi – consecratio, posant èmfasi en els cerimonials funeraris imperials romans. També s’ha tingut en compte, però, la dependència de l’ascens de Crist amb les seves prefiguracions judaiques, arrelades, al seu torn, a altres models hel·lènics i orientals. Seguint aquesta idea, s’ha proposat un petit estudi centrat en les fonts bíbliques i patrístiques que han ajudat a establir referents i connexions, però també possibilitats semàntiques, de l’episodi.

Evidentment, la formulació d’iconografies en el primer cristianisme no s’ha d’entendre com una creació ex novo, completament original i autònoma, sinó com a fruit d’unes dependències interconnectades i amalgamades en el context que les va veure néixer. Tot plegat esdevé quelcom coherent amb el substrat cultural de l’arc de l’antic mediterrani.

The present research has, as a general framework, the study of the appearance of the first Christian art and iconography, more specifically, the emergence of the episode of the Ascension of Christ. This scene does not appear in the very first Christian representations, but we have to wait more than a century and a half to find some witnesses. Thus, we are provided with a privileged showcase from which to observe the phenomenon of the gestation and development of the first Christian images through a particular case. That is why the main goal of this research is trying to solve the questions of when, how and why this iconography appears.

To carry it out, I have collected as many preserved works containing this episode of the life of Christ as possible. As it is not feasible an iconographic analysis detached from the work or object in which it is inscribed, I have chosen to make a brief case study of each of the pieces. This has served as a basis for raising general ideas about the composition, function or possible meanings of such iconography motif.

Another focal objective of the research has been to investigate the references and dependencies -both formal and conceptual- that could have influenced the gestation of our topic, focusing on the comparison between the Ascension and the heroic and imperial apotheosis. Therefore, I have dedicated a block to study the concept apotheosis – consecratio, emphasizing the Roman imperial funeral ceremonies. However, the dependence of the Ascension of Christ with his Jewish prefigurations -rooted in other Hellenic and Eastern models- has also been taken into account. Following this idea, I propose a brief study focused on the biblical and patristic sources that have helped to establish references and connections, but also semantic possibilities of the episode.

Obviously, the formulation of iconographies in early Christianity should not be understood as an ex novo creation, completely original and autonomous, but as the result of interconnected and amalgamated dependencies in the context in which they emerge. All this becomes a coherent and unitary whole with the cultural substratum of the ancient Mediterranean arch.
