dc.description.abstract
dc.description.abstract
Due to the increase in calculation capacities and available information, neural networks have become one of the predominant techniques for the time series forecasting. The first part of the thesis studies the irradiance forecasting for horizons of up to six hours. Different error metrics and available data sources are evaluated. The performance of the best model is tested for different data availability. The final forecasts present state of the art performances even in the absence of irradiance measurements. The second part of the thesis applies the previous forecasting techniques to other problems in the energy field, developing a neural network to forecast the electricity prices with forecasting horizons of up to 10 days. Finally, the use of these forecasts is used to simulate the decision-making by market agents and assess their potential benefits.
