De la utopía a la distopía. Un análisis de El cuento de la criada (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Abstract

La presente tesis doctoral estudia la utopía y la distopía ―primera y segunda parte respectivamente― desde los ámbitos de la filosofía, la historia, la literatura y el cine, con el objetivo de investigar cómo se conforman en el horizonte de la humanidad; demostrar que ambas se encuentran determinadas por el contexto en el que surgen; y que, aunque son diferentes, están estrechamente relacionadas. Además, todo se desarrolla desde una perspectiva de género, con el propósito de revelar diferencias y similitudes entre utopías y distopías escritas por hombres y por mujeres. En la tercera y última parte, se aborda el análisis audiovisual de la serie de televisión El cuento de la criada (The Handmaid’s Tale), basada en la novela de Margaret Atwood, tratando de desvelar el modo en que la distopía puede ser representada de forma audiovisual ―a través de imágenes―, complementando y ampliando los efectos producidos por la palabra escrita.

The main aim of this doctoral thesis is to study the concepts of “utopia” and “dystopia” ―first and second respectively―, using a methodology that combines philosophy, history, literature, and cinema, with the aim of discovering that they are part of human nature; and that they are determined by the context in which they emerge; and, finally, to prove that although they are different, they are not opposites. In addition, a gender perspective is applied with the purpose of revealing differences and similarities between utopias and dystopias written by men and women. Once these goals have been accomplished, the audiovisual analysis of the television series The Handmaid's Tale ―based on the novel by Margaret Atwood― is carried out from a gender perspective to reveal the way in which the concept of dystopia can be represented in an audiovisual way ―that is, through images―, and how it complements and expands the novel.
