La mirada inquieta: Las estructuras narrativas del wéstern y del thriller en el cine de Gonzalo Suárez

Abstract

En las investigaciones sobre la evolución del lenguaje cinematográfico y la teoría de los géneros el wéstern y el thriller ocupan un lugar privilegiado. Sus estructuras narrativas han pervivido, con trasformaciones, a lo largo de toda la historia del cine. En esta tesis se analiza la cuestión de los géneros, se traza un recorrido histórico por la evolución del wéstern y del thriller y se establecen las estructuras narrativas que han perdurado en ambos géneros y se han extendido a otros. Otro objetivo de esta tesis es demostrar que esas mismas estructuras contribuyen a construir de manera híbrida el cine de Gonzalo Suárez. Estas estructuras constituyen una constante estilística y un punto de apoyo para su cine y su universo creativo. En los filmes de Gonzalo Suárez las estructuras narrativas del wéstern y del thriller perviven y contribuyen a hacer un cine personal que las trasciende sin someterse a ellas. A través del análisis de las películas Beatriz, Parranda, El detective y la muerte y El portero, nuestra tesis demuestra que las estructuras narrativas del thriller y el wéstern han proporcionado a Gonzalo Suárez una herramienta expresiva para su cine personal. En su periodo inicial el director se sirve del wéstern y del thriller para elaborar sus películas al margen de su clasificación genérica. En su periodo de madurez vuelve a esas estructuras para crear un thriller innovador, El detective y la muerte, y un wéstern igualmente insólito, El portero. Demostramos de esta manera que las estructuras narrativas y dramáticas del wéstern y del thriller, reelaboradas y asumidas de una manera personal, perviven en la filmografía de Gonzalo Suárez y contribuyen a construir su obra metatextual alejada de los clichés de los géneros cinematográficos.

In research on the evolution of film language and the western and the thriller genre theory occupy a privileged place. Their narrative structures have survived, with transformations, throughout the history of cinema. This thesis analyses the question of genres, traces the historical evolution of the western and the thriller and establishes the narrative structures that have endured in both genres and have been extended to others. Another objective of this thesis is to demonstrate that these same structures contribute to the hybrid construction of Gonzalo Suárez's films. These structures constitute a stylistic constant and a fulcrum for his films and his creative universe. In Gonzalo Suárez's films, the narrative structures of the western and the thriller survive and contribute to make personals films that transcends them without submitting to them. Through the analysis of the films Beatriz, Parranda, El detective y la muerte and El portero, our thesis demonstrates that the narrative structures of the thriller and the western have provided Gonzalo Suárez with an expressive tool for his personal filmography. In his early period, the director uses the western and the thriller to elaborate his films regardless of their generic classification. In his mature period, he returns to these structures to create an innovative thriller, El detective y la muerte, and an equally unusual western, El portero. In this way we demonstrate that the narrative and dramatic structures of the western and the thriller, reworked and assumed in a personal way, survive in Gonzalo Suárez's filmography and contribute to build his metatextual work far from the topics of the film genres.
