Abstract

This thesis is focused on the reaction of aromatic isocyanates with polyfluorinated alcohols. The main drawback for this type of reactions is the low nucleophilicity of polyfluorinated alcohols, which do not react with isocyanates in standard conditions. Thus, the aim was to find a way to perform these reactions and use it to prepare polyfluorinated carbamates and polyfluorinated polyurethanes. A case-study approach using a simple model reaction was adopted. The reaction of phenyl isocyanate PhNCO with 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol TFE showed interesting peculiarities not present with non-fluorinated alcohols. Remarkably, this reaction required hydrogen bond acceptor solvents and low concentrations to proceed at useful rates. In addition and more surprisingly, a fractional global reaction order was calculated and there was a null effect of substituent on phenyl isocyanate according to the Hammett equation. Those findings suggested a more complex pathway than the previously reported polar mechanism, most probably involving free radicals. This hypothesis was supported by radical scavenging experiments with galvinoxyl, sub-stoichiometric amounts stopped the reactions. Further evidences came from spin-trapping electron paramagnetic resonance that revealed the presence of oxygen-centered free radicals derived from the polyfluorinated alcohol, probably reaction intermediates. A lifetime in the order of milliseconds for these radicals was determined by cyclic voltammetry. Considering all those results a new pseudo-unimolecular radical chain mechanism was proposed. In donor solvents at low concentrations, the preferred solvent/alcohol hydrogen bond adduct undergoes a proton-coupled electron transfer PCET that trigger a radical chain mechanism. In weak donor solvents, instead of solvent/alcohol, the isocyanate/alcohol adduct is formed, and thus, the radical chain is not triggered, which explains why the ground state reaction does not proceed. Alternatively in these conditions, a PCET could be promoted on the isocyanate/alcohol complex by irradiation with UV light. This photochemical activation was required to obtain complete reaction of polyfluorinated diols with PhNCO and with pentafluorophenyl isocyanate to obtain polyfluorinated and quasi-perfluorinated bis(phenylcarbamates), respectively. Surface properties of those new highly fluorinated compounds have been tested using spin coating deposition over a glass surface and contact angle measurements. Remarkably, length of the polyfluorinated chain seemed not as important as the presence of pentafluorophenyl rings for hydro- and oleophobicity. Small perfluorinated bis(phenylcarbamates) turned out to be highly oleophobic, even more than Teflon. The photochemical methodology was used to prepare polyfluorinated polyurethanes. The photopolymerization of a polyfluorinated diol with an aromatic diisocyanate produced hydroxyl-terminated polyurethanes. However, there seemed to be a limit in the growth of these polymers. Lowering the temperature of the reaction prove to be an effective way to obtain polymers with higher molecular weights. Preliminary studies were carried out to prepare perfluorinated polyurethanes. Using a perfluorinated aromatic diisocyanate and a polyfluorinated diol the reaction took place but just in a limited extend, thus requiring further research and optimization. Finally, this method was assayed with other acidic weak nucleophiles. In the photopolymerization of aromatic diisocyanate with a commercial bisphenol polymers of high molecular weight were obtained. This indicates that this methodology is not limited to polyfluorinated diols, but also extensible to other acidic weak nucleophilic monomers, opening a new avenue of research.
