El conflicte social en el teatre català del tombant de segle (1890-1909): identitat de classe, moral social i debat polític

Abstract

La tesi El conflicte social en el teatre català del tombant de segle (1890-1909): identitat de classe, moral social i debat polític és una aportació inèdita i original al coneixement de la literatura dramàtica catalana del tombant de segle i les dinàmiques politicosocials que reflectia de manera directa o indirecta. A partir d’una metodologia eclèctica i transversal, innovadora en els estudis teatrals, aplica els conceptes d’“identitat de classe”, “moral social” i “cultura política” a l’anàlisi d’una mostra significativa de textos teatrals d’autors i procedències ideològiques diverses durant els anys 1890-1909. El treball consta de quatre capítols ben delimitats: en el primer, se situen les coordenades històriques, polítiques, socials i culturals que emmarquen la nova modernitat, especialment en l’àmbit del teatre català; en el segon, s’examinen els debats al voltant del conflicte social i estètic del tombant de segle i s’adscriuen els dramaturgs estudiats en grans categories ideològiques; en el tercer, el més rellevant de tots, s’interpreta en profunditat la mostra d’obres triada a la llum dels conceptes d’“identitat de classe”, “moral social” i “debat polític”, entesos com a elements bàsics d’un teatre de contingut social; en el quart, finalment, s’indaga en la dramatúrgia catòlica i les seves plataformes de difusió com a “contramirall” del tipus de teatre de conflicte ideològic analitzat en el cos de la tesi. Aquesta tesi obre un nou enfocament en l’estudi de la literatura dramàtica catalana i el teatre català en general del segle XX, ja que hi aporta una mirada transversal en què conflueixen disciplines diverses de les ciències humanes i socials (des de la història a la ciència política, tot passant per la filologia, la sociologia o l’antropologia). Fonamentada en una base documental tant hemerogràfica com bibliogràfica, també posa de manifest la centralitat del conflicte social i de les seves derivacions en el teatre català del tombant de segle.

The thesis El conflicte social en el teatre català del tombant de segle (1890-1909): identitat de classe, moral social I debat politic is an original and unprecedented contribution to the Catalan dramatic literature of the turn of the century and the political and social dynamics it somehow reflected in a direct or indirect method. From a transversal and eclectic methodology, rather experimental in the dramatic studies, it applies the concepts of ‘social identity’, ‘social morality’ and ‘political culture’ to the analysis of a remarkable sample of author’s playwright texts and various ideological origins from 1890 to 1909. The essay consists of four well-delimited chapters: firstly, chapter one presents the historical, political, social and cultural background which frames the new modernity, particularly in the Catalan theatre field; in the second chapter, the debates about the social and the aesthetic conflicts of the turn of the century are examined and the studied playwrights are categorized into different ideological categories; in the third chapter, the most significant one, the sample of works chosen by the concepts of ‘social identity’, ‘social morality’ and ‘political debate’ are thoroughly interpreted, being them understood as basic elements of a theatre of social content; finally, in chapter four, the Catholic playwriting and its disseminating means as a opposed to the kind of ideological conflict theatre analyzed in the body of the thesis. This thesis unfolds a new direction for the study of the Catalan dramatic literature and the twentieth century Catalan theatre in general, since this essay analyses it in a transversal way so that diverse disciplines from human and social sciences merge (from history to political science, passing through philology, sociology or anthropology). Being the thesis supported by documentary sources both bibliographic and from periodicals, it also states the centrality of the social conflict and its consequence in the Catalan theatre of the turn of the century.
