Política, estrategia y pensamiento militar bajo los Antoninos (96-192)

Abstract

El presente trabajo de tesis doctoral tiene por finalidad la reconstrucción del Pensamiento Geográfico y militar romano durante el periodo histórico conocido como Los Antoninos. El objetivo del trabajo doctoral guardó relación con analizar las diferentes estructuras políticas, mentales y geográficas que confluyeron en la conformación de un pensamiento estratégico particular. De este modo se sostiene que más que discutir la la existencia o no de una Grand Strategy se debe avanzar en una nueva definición del pensamiento militar y estratégico romano proponiéndose para ello una nueva conceptualización al respecto. En ese supuesto se elaboró una redefinición estratégica que involucró la concepción que el mundo romano tenía del espacio geográfico que construyó y habitó, los valores militares y geográficos, así como la concepción que se tuvo de la Guerra y la Paz. El siglo II fue el escogido porque es un siglo terminal de los grandes cambios que sufrió el Imperio Romano en casi doscientos años de Historia y donde con mayor fuerza las fuentes nos revelan el impacto de dichos cambios, sobre todo geográficos. Las figuras de Trajano y Adriano fueron esenciales para lograr este objetivo, cuyas hazañas hemos unificadas en el marco anteriormente enunciado, construyéndose un cuadro de unidad que coadyuvó en la redefinición conceptual indicada. En cuanto a la metodología se utilizaron fuentes literarias, epigráficas y numismáticas para la reconstrucción histórica tal como lo planteó Alföldy en 1983.

The present work of doctoral thesis aims at the reconstruction of the Roman Geographical and Military Thinking during the historical period known as The Antonines. The objective of the doctoral work was related to analyze the different political, mental and geographical structures that came together in the formation of a particular strategic knowledge. In this way, it is argued that rather than discussing the existence or not of a Grand Strategy, a new definition of Roman military and strategic thinking must be advanced, proposing a new conceptualization in this regard. In that case a strategic redefinition was elaborated that involved the conception that the Roman world had of the geographic space that constructed and inhabited, the military and geographic values, as well as the conception that was had of the War and the Peace. The second century was the chosen one because it is a terminal century of the great changes that underwent the Roman Empire in almost two hundred years of History and where with greater force the sources reveal to us the impact of these changes, mainly geographic. The figures of Trajan and Hadrian were essential to achieve this goal, whose achievements we have unified in the above-mentioned framework, constructing a table of unity that contributed to the indicated conceptual redefinition. As for the methodology, literary, epigraphic and numismatic sources were used for historical reconstruction.
