Abstract

This research conciliates curriculum innovation, educational research and Secondary teacher training in Social Sciences. It examines a working line which pretends to generate a change, innovate, in the educational methods in the classroom in order to adapt the Social Science teaching and learning process to the needs of the new contexts. Its aim is to answer questions such as: what is the best way to work in the classroom in order to achieve a good learning process in Social Sciences? How can the Social Science teaching staff obtain 'good practices'? How can a secondary teacher be trained 'feeling' that is being trained? How can the teaching staff assume the theoretical knowledge of an innovation?
The research has been carried out thanks to the collaboration of Diàleg 9, a team of 9 people from different specialities within the Social Sciences area, working in ESO (Secondary Education) and Batxillerat (General Certificate of Education), who accepted with pleasure to innovate in their classrooms. In order to assume the theoretical framework of the research line based on key social concepts studied by Benejam, Batllori or Casas, a training course was created and their every day cooperation made the research possible while we all learned to implement 'good educational practices'.
The thesis consists of two parts. The first part describes the whole process for the reader to be situated in the research context. The research is justified, mentioning reasons based on the wish, both of the researcher and the team which is studied, to show the comprehension and the compromise from the desire of working in cooperation. In the first part the methodology used is also exposed and justified and finally theoretical bases are examined: on the one hand, the ones that are used in the curriculum innovation and on the other hand, those on which the research process is based.
The second part is composed of two big chapters: in the first chapter (Thesis, chapter 6) the curriculum innovation is expounded and justified grounded on 2 social key concepts (conflict and power), on specific cognitive linguistics skills (definition, narration, description, explanation, justification and argumentation), on social skills and on teaching and learning strategies, among which teamwork and debate stand out. The formation project, which was elaborated to assume the theoretical framework of innovation, is also presented, explained and justified, and there is a description of all the steps and the implementation outcomes are analysed and interpreted. The second chapter of the second part (Thesis, chapter 7) traces the didactic intervention, specifying the courses, the pupils, the context of every didactic unit, etc. Finally, the results of the didactic unit are analysed and interpreted.
The research has been conducted following a qualitative methodology as the purpose was an educational research based not on a technical or instrumental rationality but a human rationality which uses the 'sensitive rationality', taking into account what in modern times is called 'rationality' but also containing 'feeling' and 'emotion'. Yet, assuming that the objective of the research was to grasp and rebuild the meaning of processes, behaviour and actions which take place in a particular social climate: the school, the classroom; a particular and holistic approach was needed, so as not to divide the reality to excess. As for the systematisation of the information, an inductive process rather than deductive has been used due to the difficulty in the analysis of what has arisen from the subject of study and the duration of the research, which has been difficult to theorize.
The rigorousness and the objectivity have always been a major goal of the research, which has not been easy due to the double condition of colleague and researcher, so it has required a multiple triangulation, in time, subjects and methods. Finally, in order to lead the innovation and the research without acting as a teacher, the research-action methods (Carr, Elliott, Kemmis, Stenhouse) which conciliate theory and practice have been very useful.
A new model of permanent training can be deduced from the conclusions of the research and it is different from those created so far and it demonstrates that helps the Secondary teaching staff to implement 'good practices', as it easily assumes new theoretical innovation guides, and it also guarantees a good learning process for the pupils.
The proposed model fosters the need and wish for training by those who are being trained. The demand, originated within the teaching staff who wants to be trained, eliminates internal opposition, creates team work, entails personal satisfaction, encourages innovation, provides a shared and adapted curriculum project to the environment, improves the relational atmosphere and converts the working place into a learning and professional place.
