El «Cicle del Pallars» de Maria Barbal: memòria de la Guerra Civil i l’èxode rural

Abstract

La tesi «El 'Cicle del Pallars' de Maria Barbal: memòria de la Guerra Civil i l'èxode rural» se centra en l'anàlisi textual de les novel·les de Maria Barbal constitutives d'aquest cicle a partir dels eixos històrics de la Guerra Civil espanyola, la dictadura franquista i l'èxode rural. La investigació se situa en la intersecció entre els estudis literaris i els de la memòria cultural i s'estructura en dues parts: l'aproximació teòrica al voltant de la memòria i la seva representació i l'articulació de l'anàlisi literària de la unitat narrativa. A partir d'un model d'anàlisi literària que incorpora els elements narratius i els memorístics com a categories d'anàlisi, aprofundeix en la construcció literària del territori i en la narrativa ficcional de la memòria. Aquest mateix model analític permet ampliar l'objecte d'estudi a altres autors i narratives que comparteixen amb el Cicle del Pallars els eixos estructuradors del relat, bàsicament, la guerra espanyola. L'objectiu de la tesi és vincular les obres del Cicle del Pallars amb les narratives de la memòria a través de la identificació, a les obres, dels elements que la constitueixen: l'oblit, el trauma i el dol, la figura del testimoni i la de la víctima. D'aquesta manera, es pretén inscriure les obres del corpus en el debat sobre la memòria de la Guerra Civil i encetar un camp d'estudi, inèdit en l'àmbit de les lletres catalanes, en què la narrativa es constitueix en un mitjà de memòria. Aquest plantejament insereix el Cicle del Pallars en les coordenades hermenèutiques internacionals a l'entorn de la memòria i la seva representació cultural. Per tal d'aconseguir aquest objectiu, l'estudi justifica que totes les obres del corpus constitueixen una unitat narrativa determinada, diferenciada de la resta de l'opus barbaliana, i identifica els mecanismes que vinculen aquesta narrativa amb les narratives de la memòria i, més específicament, la seva vinculació a la memòria cultural com a sistema capaç d'intervenir en la modificació de l'imaginari col·lectiu i en la construcció de sentit a través de la configuració de noves memòries. Aquest enfocament constitueix una de les aportacions més significatives de la tesi, ja que els estudis de l'obra barbaliana del Pallars habitualment en fan un abordatge des del punt de vista de la recuperació del món extint del Pirineu, és a dir, amb el territori i la seva reconstrucció literària com a centre principal d'interès. Aquesta tesi vol subratllar la qualitat literària de les obres que conformen el corpus analitzat i defensa la seva adscripció a les literatures europees constitutives de la memòria col·lectiva i les seves manifestacions artístiques a l'entorn dels grans esdeveniments històrics del segle XX.

The thesis «The Pallars Cycle by Maria Barbal: memory of the Spanish Civil War and rural exodus» is focused on the textual analysis of Maria Barbal’s novels which constitute this cycle, from the historical axes of the Spanish Civil War, the Francoist dictatorship and the rural exodus. The research is set at the crossroads between literary studies and cultural memory, and is structured in two parts: the theoretical approach towards memory and its representation, and the articulation of the literary analysis of the narrative unit. From a literary analysis technique which features narrative and memory elements as categories of analysis, it goes deeper into the literary construction of terroir and the fictional narrative of memory. This method of analysis makes it possible to broaden the aim of the study to other authors and narratives which share the axes which structure the plot, basically the Spanish Civil War. The aim of the thesis is linking the works of the Pallars Cycle to memory narratives by identifying the elements which constitute them in the works: oblivion, trauma and mourning, the characters of the witness and the victim. In this way, the referred works are intended to be included in the discussion on the Spanish Civil War, while starting a field for study, a novelty in Catalan literature, where narrative becomes a means for memory. This approach sets the Pallars Cycle within the international hermeneutical coordinates on memory and its cultural depiction. To this aim, the study claims that all the works of the corpus constitute a specific narrative unit, distinct from the rest of the Barbal works, identifying the mechanisms which link this narrative to the narrative of memory and, more specifically, their links to cultural memory as a system capable of playing a part in the modification of collective imagery and in the construction of a sense through the setting of new memories. This approach constitutes one of the most significant contributions of the thesis, as the studies on Barbal’s Pallars works usually tend to approach them from the standpoint of the recovery of the extinct world of the Pyrenees, namely, the terroir and its literary re-construction as a focal point of interest. This thesis intends to underline the literary quality of the works which constitute the corpus being analyzed, and vows for its inclusion among the European literatures which constitute common memory and its artistic expressions around the great historical facts of the 20th century
