Abstract

The present doctoral thesis becomes an study about immigration in the city of Lleida and the repercussions that occurred there. Therefore, it will be a demographic study on the evolution of population growth in Lleida capital while other issues directly influenced by this increase in population, essentially urban planning, will be analyzed. The twentieth century has been a century of continuous and sustained ascent to the population of Catalonia and Lleida has not been an exception. Beyond the model and specificity of the case of Barcelona, the capital of el Segrià has experienced an increase of almost ninety thousand people in just one hundred years and the person in charge of this increase is, for almost sixty years, the immigrant. The contribution made by immigration is essential to understand the conformation of the current Lleida and the political context in which its arrival occurred justifies, in part, the urban configuration of the city. Because of the whole century, the Franco dictatorship is the one that has most contributed to this demographic rise and to the urban transformation of Lleida. The Civil War and the economic, political and social repercussions that resulted from it resulted in the emigration of large contingents of population from rural areas to the most industrially developed territories. Its installation at the arrival site resulted in the emergence of self-construction districts and barracks in the most peripheral areas of the cities. The neighborhoods of the Magraners and the Secà de Sant Pere in Lleida, as with the Residencial Polígono de Santa Maria de Gardeny or the Canyeret - an area packed in the old quarter—, respond to this dynamics of suburbanization where we find a high concentration of population immigrant The development of these neighborhoods and the improvement in the conditions of life and habitability were in the hands of their residents since they were left for a long time forgotten by the local Francoist institutions. Its integration into the urban network did not take place until the end of the sixties, in the early seventies, when the emergence of protest movements and neighborhood groups began to raise their voices and demand improvements in services and infrastructure for these neighborhoods. Thus, this research aims to illustrate a demographic and city-planning history of the city starring a population that arrived from various points of Spain and that contributed to the development of Lleida that we know today.
