Abstract

The main objective of this research work is to obtain and analyse the main factors that influence family businesses which have a rapid growth in turnover and profits in the Chilean wine sector. In order to know the factors that influence the companies that have a rapid growth, some evidence has been directly obtained from the wineries' directors and managers through online and face-to-face surveys, conferences, visits to diverse vineyards, interviews with family business owners, Wines of Chile's management team and academics of the sector. In order to obtain greater knowledge of the sector, a 'case study' has been performed which has been applied to 6 family businesses in the wine sector in various Chilean valleys. This study was published in the Management Studies journal "Exploring features and opportunities of rapid-growth wine firms in Chile" (Román, Cancino, Gallizo 2017). The aim was to detect the characteristics that determine the rapid growth of wine companies in Chile. The results obtained indicated the presence of a common factor; that was, the existence of strategic planning, directed in two management lines: a) growth and b) commitment to improve the production and sales process. Both management lines of the organizations proved to have a different impact on the two groups of companies: fast growing and moderate growing.
