Josep Gudiol Ricart (1904-1985): la fotografia al servei d’una concepció integral de la Història de l’Art

Abstract

Tot i el reconeixement que s’ha atorgat a algunes de les activitats relacionades amb la Història de l’Art dutes a terme per Josep Gudiol Ricart, la major part dels àmbits professionals als quals es va dedicar al llarg de tota la seva trajectòria són desconeguts o han estat treballats de manera molt parcial. La seva importància historiogràfica, així com la fundació i la direcció de l’Institut Amatller d’Art Hispànic durant més de quaranta anys, justifiquen l’estudi de la seva figura, però el veritable interès de la seva producció rau en la integració d’àmbits que conformaven la seva manera de treballar. Durant la seva carrera professional, Gudiol va destacar en vuit àmbits principals relacionats amb la Història de l’Art: fotografia, historiografia, món editorial, restauració, comerç, expertització i assessoria, docència i, finalment, museografia. De tots ells, el que va desenvolupar durant més temps i de manera més intensiva va ser l’activitat fotogràfica que, a més a més, era per a ell una eina per a la resta. Per aquest motiu hem dividit la nostra recerca en dos blocs. Un primer que mostra tota la seva trajectòria professional destacant cronològicament algunes de les fites més importants que va realitzar de tots els àmbits, amb la finalitat de mostrar la seva interrelació i l’activitat simultània en tots ells amb la qual treballava Gudiol. I un segon, dedicat específicament a la seva activitat fotogràfica, on analitzem en detall els seus dos principals projectes fotogràfics: l’Arxiu d’Arqueologia Catalana i l’Institut Amatller d’Art Hispànic. D’aquesta manera, analitzem la creació i el desenvolupament de l’Arxiu d’Arqueologia Catalana, primer intent de posseir una completa fototeca d’art hispànic que també era un negoci de venda de còpies fotogràfiques, estroncat per la Guerra Civil. I un segon apartat corresponent a l’Institut Amatller d’Art Hispànic, institució fundada per Teresa Amatller. Serà des d’aquesta entitat des d’on, a banda de dirigir la seva activitat fotogràfica i la d’Ampliaciones y Reproducciones Mas, va donar curs a un bon nombre d’altres activitats relacionades amb la resta d’àmbits que hem anomenat. Destaquen entre elles l’activitat pedagògica i editorial, la publicació pròpia de articles i monografies, així com la participació en algunes relacions comercials i en un gran nombre d’assessoraments i d’expertitzacions. Tot plegat li va comportar la creació d’una gran i potent xarxa de contactes internacional que li va suposar un gran reconeixement. Estudiar en profunditat i donar a conèixer l’activitat fotogràfica de Josep Gudiol i les derivades que aquesta va tenir en altres àmbits és l’objectiu d’aquesta recerca que es planteja com una primer estudi en profunditat de la seva figura.

Even if Josep Gudiol Ricart’s activity in the field of Art History has been duly recognised, most of the disciplines he focused on during his lifelong career are little known or lack a complete research. His relevance for Historiography, together with his founding and managerial role of the Amatller Institute of Hispanic Art, justify in themselves a thorough study of his works, but the real interest of his contribution lies in how he integrated several disciplines into his personal working approach. During his career, Gudiol excelled in eight major Art History fields: Photography, Historiography, Publishing, Restoration, Sales, Counselling and Expertise, Teaching and Museography. Of these, Photography was not only the one he developed for longer and more intensively but also a tool for the other disciplines. The present research is consequently divided into two parts. The first part is an overview of Gudiol’s career, including a timeline of his most important contributions to the aforementioned Art History fields which highlights the extent of interrelation and simultaneity of Gudiol’s work on them. The second part focuses on Gudiol’s photographic activity and analyses in depth his two main photography projects: the Catalan Archaeology Archive and the Amatller Institute of Hispanic Art. The analysis of the Catalan Archaeology Archive’s creation and development shows that it was a first attempt –nipped in the bud by the Spanish Civil War- at owning a complete phototec of Hispanic art and also a photography sale business. The research on the Amatller Institute of Hispanic Art, founded by Teresa Amatller, shows how Gudiol not only directed both his own photography projects and Ampliaciones y Reproducciones Mas, but also linked many of his other fields of interest in his daily work from there. Outstanding among these interests are his publishing and teaching endeavours, self-published articles and monographies, participation in commercial ventures and counselling and expertise services. Such a multi-faceted approach allowed Gudiol to keep a wide powerful network of international contacts that brought him significant recognition. The present research, conceived as a first in-depth study of Josep Gudiol Ricart, therefore aims at providing detailed research on Gudiol’s photographic activity and its impact on other fields and to disseminate his contributions to Art History.
