Abstract

[eng] ʿArīb Ibn Saʿid (d. 370/980) was an outstanding physician and courtier of the Andalusi Umayyads. He was also a polymath who wrote books on history and medicine. He also wrote a treatise on anwāʾ that became popular in al-Andalus and was quoted (explicitly or implicitly) by many later authors. It seems that ʿArīb’s treatise gained a wide readership and several versions of it were made by unknown authors. The Calendar of Cordova was considered as a helpful historical source because it contained information about Cordovan society. Besides the Latin versions, the first known Arabic text of ʿArīb’s Kitāb al-Anwāʾ is the so-called Calendar of Cordova, edited by R. Dozy (1873) and by Pellat (1961) on the basis Dozy’s work. The second Arabic text is an anomimous treatise entitled Risāla fī awqāt al- sana (ed. M.A. Navarro 1991). The aim of this dissertation is to edit and study two manuscripts that contain relevant versions of ʿArīb’s Kitāb al-Anwāʾ. The most important of them is ms. 2049 of Millī Malik Library (Tehran), attributed to al-Kātib al-Andalusī. It is the longest of the extant manuscripts and seems to be the closest extant version to ʿArīb’s original work form many reasons. The most relevant of them are: ʿArīb was known as al- Kātib al-Andalusī; the work is dated in 362/973 according to the text itself; it contains materials that reappear in the Risāla fī l-Anwāʾ by Ibn al-Bannāʾ (d. 721/1321) but are not extant in any other source (Ibn al-Bannāʾ says explicitly that he quotes ʿArīb’s Anwāʾ). The second manuscript is 2918 Baladiyya Library of Alexandria. The manuscript of Tehran (and not less important, the manuscript of Alexandria) provides a new perspective about ʿArīb’s treatise. They contain a wealth of materials that are not extant anywhere else: poems by Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ and al-Fazārī otherwise unknown, meteorological proverbs, information about special periods of weather and navigation, brontoscopy, celebrations of Christians and Jews, ephemerides of relevant personages of Islam and so on. The sections about agriculture and medicine that are an important part of the known works (Calendar of Cordova and Risālā fī awqāt al-sana) are significatively longer and richer in the manuscripts of Tehran and Alexandria. These materials are closely analysed and compared to related sources, including manuscript Ar. 2425. An important number of tables has been made in order to gain a more thorough knowledge of ʿArīb’s Kitāb al-Anwāʾ. All in all, this dissertation contributes with a best understanding of the importance of ʿArīb’s work, its relationship with the society, and its diffusion throughout the Mediterranean world.
