Reyes Cancino, Juan (Date of defense: 2025-07-04)
(English) The high seismic hazard present in the Chilean territory demands that essential buildings, such as educational facilities, be designed under rigorous structural performance criteria. However, recent events such ...
Análisis y propuesta de calificación sísmica de elementos no estructurales
Prats Bella, Ferran (Date of defense: 2025-06-06)
(English) In the nuclear industry, safety-related equipment and components must be designed to withstand earthquakes without losing functionality. The floor response spectrum (FRS) is a widely used method for seismic ...
Nonlinear identification of underground seismic ground motions from surface record
Rodríguez Sánchez, Julio (Date of defense: 2025-05-08)
(English) In earthquake engineering, generally only surface records are available; therefore, the motion of the lower soil layers must be estimated by depropagation analysis. Underground accelerograms are relevant in ...
New timber - steel construction system for improved lateral resistance buildings
Segués Aguasca, Edgar (Date of defense: 2024-10-25)
Montalbán Turón, Carlos (Date of defense: 2021-06-30)
(English) In this PhD Dissertation the structural performance of buildings with stairs submitted to lateral loads, is investigated. Because of the historical neglect of the interaction effects between the main structure ...
Intelligent condition monitoring of structures through data-driven process and machine learning methods
Leon Medina, Jersson Xavier (Date of defense: 2023-10-06)
(English) In the last years, the condition monitoring of structures has evolved and improved using technologies such as artificial intelligence, sensor networks, and industry 4.0 because of the multiple advantages these ...
Seismic performance improvement of underground structures through a low lateral stiffness design
Bu, Xiangbo (Date of defense: 2023-11-09)
(English) Recent decades have witnessed varying degrees of damage in underground structures, including instances of structural collapse, reported during post-earthquake hazard investigations. Therefore, the research on ...
Influence of axial compression ratio in building columns
Villar Salinas, Sergio (Date of defense: 2023-12-15)
(English) Axial forces in columns of moment-resisting frames (MRF) have a paramount role for the seismic performance of these structural systems. Nonetheless, there are significant gaps in the literature entailing the ...
Determinación del grado de daño de una estructura mediante el análisis de la variación de frecuencias
Martín Balet, Alejo (Date of defense: 2023-06-23)
(English) This thesis proposes to determine a damaged structure using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of modal frequency variation of sorne damaged and undamaged configurations. The estimators used are the accumulated ...
Soil-structure interaction in the performance-based seismic design of reinforced-concrete buildings
Baquero Mosquera, Juan Sebastián (Date of defense: 2023-06-22)
(English) When analyzing structures for seismic design and performance assessment purposes, it has been common to assume that the ground motions or their equivalent representations correspond to that of the free-field ...
Inspección no destructiva de estructuras mediante georradar : análisis de daños por corrosión y por otras patologías
Sossa Arancibia, Viviana Alejandra (Date of defense: 2021-03-11)
This thesis aims to studythe capacities and limitations of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to support inspection, assessment, maintenance and rehabilitation tasks, helping to earlydetection and evaluation ofpathologies in ...
Structural damage monitoring based on machine learning and bio-inspired computing
Vitola Oyaga, Jaime (Date of defense: 2021-01-28)
For a few decades, systems for supervising structures have become increasingly irnportant. In origin, the strategies had as a goal only the detection of damages. Furthermore, now monitoring the civil or military structures ...
Diagnosis of low-speed bearings via vibration-based entropy indicators and acoustic emissions
Sandoval Núñez, Diego Aníbal (Date of defense: 2021-11-12)
Wind energy is one ofthe main renewable energies to replace fossil fuels in the generation of electricityworldwide. To enhance and accelerate its implementation at a large scale, it is vital to reduce the costs associated ...
Directionality and soils' effects on the seismic hazard and risk : applications to ground motion big data sets and to urban environments
Pinzón Ureña, Luis (Date of defense: 2020-09-18)
Earthquakes are defined as a "violent shaking of the Earth's crust and mantle, caused by forces acting inside the Earth". In most cases, these forces are caused by an energy release process generated from the contact of ...
